REFUGE Marketing
Hiring SEO/AEO/GEO Specialist – REFUGE Marketing
About the Role
We’re looking for a skilled and self-motivated SEO/AEO/GEO Specialist to take the reins on search visibility for REFUGE and our clients, across traditional search engines and the AI-powered answer engines that are increasingly shaping how people find information. You’ll lead the development, implementation, and performance tracking of comprehensive search strategies, including on-page, off-page, and technical SEO, alongside answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI/generative engine optimization (AIO/GEO) tactics that get content surfaced and cited in tools like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
This is an independent contractor position (not an employee role), paid hourly based on experience. If you’re a strong fit, there’s real room to grow with us as REFUGE expands, including more hours, more clients, and more responsibility over time.
Your Responsibilities
SEO Strategy & Execution
-
Develop, implement, and manage SEO strategies for REFUGE and our clients, proactively identifying what needs to be done without waiting to be told
-
Conduct thorough technical SEO audits, identify critical issues impacting performance, and work with development teams to implement solutions
-
Turn keyword research into content strategies that drive qualified traffic and conversions, not just rankings
-
Manage link building strategies and coordinate with external vendors when needed for backlink outreach or technical optimization
-
Diagnose traffic drops and algorithm impacts, and lead recovery efforts from penalties or algorithmic downturns
AEO & AI Search Optimization
-
Structure and optimize content so it’s easily discoverable, extractable, and citable by AI answer engines and assistants (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and similar tools)
-
Implement schema markup, entity clarity, and answer-first content formatting to improve visibility in AI-generated responses
-
Monitor and track how REFUGE and client brands are cited (or missed) across AI search surfaces, and adjust strategy accordingly
-
Stay current on the fast-evolving AEO/GEO/AIO landscape and translate emerging best practices into practical strategy
Reporting & Collaboration
-
Set concrete KPI targets, track performance consistently, and take ownership of results
-
Collaborate closely with content creators, designers, developers, and the marketing strategist to align SEO/AEO efforts with broader marketing goals
-
Create clear, insightful reports that demonstrate ROI and translate technical SEO/AEO concepts for both internal team members and client stakeholders
-
Use project management tools (like Asana) to manage workflow and ensure nothing slips through the cracks
Required Qualifications
-
5+ years of SEO experience, ideally in an agency or multi-client setting
-
Working knowledge of AEO/AIO/GEO principles and how they build on traditional SEO fundamentals
-
Strong track record of delivering consistent SEO results across multiple campaigns, with specific data and KPIs you personally established and achieved
-
Hands-on experience with tools like Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Tag Manager, and SEO platforms such as SEMrush or Ahrefs
-
In-depth understanding of technical SEO, link building, keyword research, content optimization, and local SEO
-
Ability to diagnose traffic drops and algorithm impacts, including AI-driven visibility shifts
-
Clear and persuasive written and verbal communication skills in English
-
Proven ability to manage deadlines, prioritize tasks, and juggle multiple projects without dropping the ball
-
Comfortable working independently while also being a strong team player
Preferred Qualifications
-
Experience with schema markup, Core Web Vitals, and technical audits
-
Familiarity with AI citation tracking tools or emerging AEO/GEO measurement platforms
-
Experience recovering sites from Google algorithm updates or AI Overview visibility loss
-
Familiarity with WordPress and other CMS platforms
-
A portfolio of case studies or examples of past success stories
